Abstract

Pada Gelahang marriage is relatively a new form of marriage in traditional community (desa pakraman) in Bali. Commonly the recognized form of marriage is biasa (common) marriage (the wife left her house and joined her husband’s family) and nyentana marriage (the husband left his house and joined his wife’s family). This is the consequence of kapurusa kinship system (patrilineal) in traditional community in Bali. The form of Pada Gelahang marriage was chosen for those who could not hold biasa marriage and nyentana marriage, as each bride and groom was born as the only child in their family. Based on the results of the research, there were found that the numbers of couples who had held pada gelahang marriage were increasing year to year. Based on Balinese customary law, the couples of pada gelahang marriage conduct their responsibilities in two places (double), namely the responsibilities to the family and to her husband’s traditional village, as well the responsibilities to the family and to his wife’s traditional village.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to discuss the relations of power in the history of the contemporary Hindu religion in Bali.  The concept of power relations refers to the concept of Power and Discourse of Michel Foucault, while the term “invented religion” is a development of Invented Tradition by Eric Hobsbawm. “Invented religion” in this study is defined as the practice of Hindu religion, which was invented, constructed, and officially manifested; and the religious practice which emerged in a relatively short time; and in a few years  it has been regarded as an established religion. Based on the concept of Power and Discourse of Foucault, I argue that there are relations of power that shape and sustain the practice of “invented religion.”  I will try to find the power relations in a God worshipping discourse in Samuantiga and Jagatnatha temples. There are two research questions that I raise for the argument, namely how and why these two discourses emerge and thrive in contemporary’s practice of Hinduism?  The answer to both questions will be sought at the present Balinese-Hindu intellectual thought. Then, it is assessed using the Genealogy Method of  Foucault. My conclusion is that the presence of the two discourses is only to harmonize Hinduism with  Islam as the majority religion in Indonesia.

Abstract

AbstractThe existence of Balinese diaspora in East Java spreads across the districts and cities. Some developments that occurred when the Balinese formed diaspora in East Java, among others include implementing the model of religious activities to inculcate religious teachings such as dharma wacana. This paper aims to describe the structure, rhetorical pattern and linguistic characteristics of dharma wacana delivered in religious events in East Java, especially in Surabaya and Sidoarjo. The analysis suggested that the structure of dharma wacana of Balinese diaspora community consisted of an disclosure, content, and closure. The pattern also indicated that the preacher of dharma wacana had taken a variety of ways and measures for each section and had different communicative purposes as well as used different rhetorical functions. This analysis also suggested that there were some repetitions in pattern and measure such as the repetition of the proposition, quotations, arguments, and solicitation. Another rhetorical characteristic of the text of dharma wacana found in this study was that the preacher relied on references (citations) in the holy verses to justify the importance of the topic of dharma wacana. Linguistic characteristics of dharma wacana includes vocabulary of religious genre and code-mixing between subtle Bali language and Bahasa.

The study shows that the spatial distribution of the rice field land conversion form cluster pattern. This pattern emerged because of the contagious nature of the rice field land conversion that influenced by development in the sorrounding environment. The implementation of the local government policy is not effective. This is supported by some weakness in the regulation system, an increase in rice field conversion facts and negative respon from the community of the local government policy implementation. In order to make the control of the rice field land conversion run effectively, the local government should reorient the development priorities to the agricultural sector by engaging the partisipant of the local community such as subak.
